Nature reserve Äskekulla

The nature reserve Äskekulla is located at Åsnen's beach, about 8 km north of Urshult in Tingsryd municipality. The entire area around Åsnen, and not least Vemboö and the neighboring Sirkön, is characterized by a large proportion of broadleaf forest in a mosaic with farmland. The area is also notable for its tradition of fruit growing and meadow orchards.

The main part of the area is broadleaf forest or other broadleaf forest with elements of broadleaf. Beech, oak and hazel dominate. The element of birch and aspen is large over the entire area. But there are many other trees and shrubs: linden, maple, alder, ash, elm, pine, fir, hawthorn and elm. The forest as a whole has a large variation in age, layering and closure, which shows that it has been largely unaffected by forestry, other than clear-cutting, for a long time. The average age of the forest is slightly over 100 years, but the oldest trees are closer to 200 years. The forest has plenty of dead wood of different tree species and in different shapes. In the area there are a number of small fields with sunlit brows.

Fire tick grows on standing birch tree stumps and longleaf moss is found on lying dead wood. Flat feather moss, trap moss, golden cap moss, rock frullania, mugwort moss, maple lichen, rust stain, gloss stain and yellow needle grow on hardwood trunks. Several species of woodpeckers and other burrowing birds thrive in the area.

The forest in the nature reserve will be managed to preserve and restore hardwood and other deciduous forests. A small parking lot and walking path will be built in the area.
